Shopping centre shooting: gunman fired more than 100 times.

The gunman who shot dead six people at a shopping centre in Alphen aan der Rijn fired more than 100 times, the public prosecution department said on Monday. Three weapons found in the Ridderhof centre in the commuter town had all been used by the gunman, 24-year-old Tristan van der Vlis, the department said. Questions are now being asked about why Van der Vlis was granted a gun licence, given his history of mental instability. Rules. Sander Duisterhof, director of the Dutch gun owners association, told the AD the police may have failed to apply the rules properly in Van der Vlis's case.As a teenager he had been questioned by a police in connection with an air gun incident and spent 10 days in a psychiatric institution in 2009 with severe suicidal thoughts. People who are members of a gun club can apply for a licence to own weapons after being a member for a year. The licence must be renewed annually and involves a police check, the AD said. Nine people who survived Saturday's shooting remain in hospital and at least one is in a critical condition.

Afghan teenager wins right to stay.
A 14-year-old school girl threatened with deportation to Afghanistan is to be allowed to stay in the Netherlands, immigration minister Gerd Leers said on Friday. Sahar Hbrahim Gel and her family have lived in the Netherlands for 10 years. The appeal court decided in February that Sahar should be allowed to stay in the Netherlands because she was too westernised to settle back in to Afghan society.Leers appealed against that decision, saying the ruling – based on the fact the girl was westernised - was of fundamental importance to Dutch immigration law. Situation facing girls. Before reaching his decision, the minister had asked for a review of the situation facing women and girls in Afghanistan, especially those who want to go to university. A civil service briefing said westernised women and girls in Afghanistan undergo great mental pressure.'Girls who have lived a long time abroad and then return to Afghanisan stand out in the street,' the report said. 'Even if they change their appearance, by wearing a headscarf, they are still seen as foreign by the way they behave (talking before being asked a question, saying what they think and talking loudly),' the document said. The minister said some 400 Afghan girls have been in a similar situation to Sahar. Of those 110 are still in involved in the appeal situation and 40 to 50 will be allowed to stay in the Netherlands, the minister said. In his reasoning, Leer said the ages of 10 to 18 are crucial in terms of westernisation. If they have lived in the Netherlands for at least eight years, they cannot be sent back, Leers said. This does not apply if the family has deliberately frustrated the deportation process, the minister is quoted as saying.

Commando faces 120 hours community service.

A Dutch commando who in 2009 was awarded the Netherlands' highest military honour for his work in Afghanistan, should be given 120 hours community service for drugs and weapons offences, the public prosecution department said on Monday.Marco Kroon is appearing in court charged with the 'possession and supply of several electric shock weapons and possession of a small amount of cocaine'. The prosecutor has recommended community service because Kroon will be given a dishonourable discharge from the army if found guilty and that is punishment enough, the Volkskrant quoted the department as saying.
Chest hairs. The department has dropped its claims that Kroon also used drugs. Tests on six chest hairs which revealed traces of cocaine are no longer considered clear evidence and the drug could have come from his girlfriend, the paper said. Kroon has admitted ordering two electric shock weapons - one for himself and one for his brother - which he described as 'gadgets'. Kroon was awarded the Willem's Order cross by queen Beatrix in 2009. It was the first time in 54 years the medal had been awarded to an individual soldier.
During the trial, he revealed that he had rejected an out of court settlement.
